Common Causes of Lower Back Pain

Did you know that most people will experience lower back pain at some point in their life? Up to 80% of adult American’s will experience back pain at some point in their life, and back pain is believed to be the number one cause of why people take leave from their job. Lower back pain is also the leading reason why people visit the doctor for treatment. That being said, lower back pain is a common problem, one that has led to more than fifty billion dollars being spent on trying to find the causes of lower back pain.

Causes of Lower Back Pain Unknown

Despite all of the research and the commonness of the problem, there are many causes of lower back pain that have gone unknown.  While there are many people who suffer from lower back pain that cannot be pinpointed or diagnosed, the condition has many names, such as lumbago.  Lumbago can occur at any age and at any time.  When you experience lumbago you should not simply ignore it, instead you should be seen by a doctor, especially if the pain continues for more than a day or two without improving.

Another of the common causes of lower back pain is muscle strain.  Muscle strain can occur when a person lifts heavy objects, moves too quickly or in an awkward way, or even due to a fall.  In some cases the muscles will strain or even tear, which causes them to become even more inflamed, which will cause further pain due to muscle spasms.

Herniated disks are also common causes of lower back pain because the discs in the spine are meant to absorb shock, but when out of place or herniated; the disk will not absorb shock the right way.  The condition can worsen if the discs actually slip forward and this is exacerbated when you sit for long periods of time.  Another of the common causes of lower back pain is degenerative disc disease.

What many don’t realize is that the causes of lower back pain don’t have to be medical in nature, exactly.  If you don’t exercise enough you may also experience lower back pain because the muscles are not strong enough to support the body.  It is important that you exercise several times a week and practice good posture to help eliminate this cause of lower back pain.
