The problem with b  ack pain is that when your back hurts, everything else hurts as well.  It makes sense, since your back experiences quite a bit of wear and tear every day as it supports the rest of your body.   The result is that as soon as back pain begins, you want to relieve it. 

Luckily, there are many types of back pain that can be treated effectively at home, but before you start treating you need to get a diagnosis from your doctor as to what is causing the back.  The idea is to identify what type of pain can be dealt with at home and which need the help of a medical professional. 

Back Pain and Home Care 

Everyone is going to experience back pain at one time or another.  This back pain can be attributed to many things such as moving suddenly or in the wrong way, lifting a heavy object, and poor posture.  For these occasions the back pain can usually be handled at home. 

You simply need to alternate hot and cold packs on the affected area, rest your back as much as possible, and take over the counter pain medications.  If you do this for 72 hours you will usually see that the back pain gets much better or you get at least some relief.  If the pain doesn’t get a lot better in this time it may be time to see the doctor.

Back Pain Warning Signs 

In some situations a bit of back pain is more serious and is a symptom of something that needs to be addressed by a medical professional.  It is a good idea to seek medical attention immediately if your pain is intense and constant. 

You also need to consider seeing the doctor if the pain is worse when you are laying down, if there is pain or numbness in one or both legs, of if you feel tingling in any of your limbs.  You should also seek help if you have back pain that is associated with fever, stomach problems, or weakness. 

While most back pain can be cared for at home without the help of a medical professional, in some cases you will need to call a doctor. A doctor can help you find out what is causing the back pain and rule out a serious illness that may or may not be causing the pain.  Seeing a doctor can ensure that you get on the road to recovery sooner rather than later.
